Query 1 displays every customer with orders along with the sum of the TotalDue for each customer. The results are grouped by the CustomerID, and the sum is applied over each group of rows. Query 2 returns the average of the TotalDue values grouped by the TerritoryID. In each case, the nonaggregated column in the SELECT list must appear in the GROUP BY clause.

The service layer represents the business logic of the application. All operations from the presentation layer pass through the service layer. Indeed, ideally the presentation layer is a relatively thin veneer of functionality on top of the service layer. The service layer is often exposed to other external mechanisms that need to have direct access to the logic of the application for example, an application may make the methods of all or part of the service layer available via SOAP so that third parties can create their own clients to the system. The service layer itself is then a combination of business logic and an aggregation of necessary data access layer components. In my simple timesheet application, this means that you will see a lot of service layer methods as simple as (or simpler than) the example in Listing 2-1.

In most situations, a web server is publicly available so everyone can access all of its offered information. In some situations, though, you may need to add an extra layer of security and protect some directories on your web server. Without using additional modules, Apache offers two methods to restrict access: user based and host based. In this section, you ll learn how to configure both of these. If you think these methods are too limited, you have to include other modules that offer more advanced user authentication (check http://modules.apache.org for a complete list of modules). To include other modules, first make sure that the module you want to use is installed. Next, make a symbolic link to activate the module. Then include it in the configuration of your (virtual) Apache server and tune the specific configuration for that module.

Those columns must be included in the GROUP BY clause. If you don t want to group on a column, don t list it in the SELECT list. This is where developers struggle when writing aggregate queries, so I cannot stress it enough.
